3 Tips for Better Interviewing of Prospective Employees by Leif H. Smith, Psy.D.
- Start with the end in mind. Figure out which behaviors are associated with your most productive employees, and make those behaviors part of the job description for which you are interviewing. You have to know what you are looking for, and it should be behaviors that add immense value to your company.
- Make most of the interview questions behaviorally based. Most companies interview employees via a cognitively-based manner. For instance, there is a difference between asking a potential employee "What is your greatest strength?" and "What would you do if you found out a fellow employee was stealing from the company?" The first question asks the interviewee to think about presenting themselves in a positive light, and the second question is an actual in-the-moment "litmus" test for hiring an employee with character and ethics.
- Analyze prospects' answers for fit within the company mission. Aligning all hires based on company mission and objectives reduces turnover from the start. Amazingly, this doesn't seem to happen as frequently as it should.
